A Comparison Between HTML5 And CSS3
HTML5 and CSS are definitely a cutting-edge technologies while CSS3 being the younger brother, is quite distinct in terms of usability. As far as their functionalities and utilities are concerned, both of the web designing technologies adds to the next level web design trend. These are sometimes regarded even more useful than Flash.
There are so many reasons to employ these stand-apart technologies while talking of the smart designing resources.
They are used not only because they have an updated versions, but also because of the fact that they introduce a wide range of features like form controls, APIs, multimedia, structure, and semantics into the design. Either of these technologies can be imposed on to enhance the design style of the wep pages.
The most important thing to know about HTML5 and CSS3 is that one can’t learn it just by reading and having references to the tags. You need to make a little effort and proceed gradually so as to learn every minute technicality and making their proper application. However, an integration of HTML5 and CSS3 can together do wonders in web designing.
Now let us compare both of the technologies in terms of their usability and how do they differ when we talk of their functionalities.
HTML5
HTML5, which is the fifth official release for the Hypertext Markup Language is a major markup language primarily used to define and provide structure to the content of the web pages. Most of the pages on the web have seen the direct or indirect application of HTML on their website as it has been primarily a part of most of the design process. HTML exists since 1990 and so far a number of upgrades have been released. Right from 1997, HTML4 has been a primary resource of design implementations. HTML5 is the latest version of its type that was released in October 2014.
It combines the features of its predecessor in addition to XHTML and DOM level 2 HTML. Also, there is a huge scope for designing more better multimedia and user-friendly web pages and add simplicity to the design.
Several features of HTML5 includes:-
- It incorporates some functionalities of HTML4 in addition to some advance attributes like, most of the HTML elements are replaced with more user-friendly options like headers and footers. Several APIs present in HTML5 enables the addition of audio and video content to the web pages.
- Browser Compatibility-It supports latest versions of most used browsers.
- Google Chrome
- Internet Explorer
- Mozilla Firefox
- Extensive Multimedia Support
- Canvas Area– It is a rectangular space available for drawing lines and other creative works
CSS3
CSS3 stands for Cascading Sheet 3 and is the third official version of CSS. CSS is a new way that redefines the layout of the web pages most of which are built on HTML. This is done by defining a separate file called style sheet. Most of the web developers used to do this in order to link their web pages to a given CSS file. This CSS file defines different attributes of the web pages such as headers, footers, sidebars, links, menus and text etc.
Unlike CSS, CSS3 includes a number of advanced styling features which enables the web designer to manipulate various parts of the web pages viz. backgrounds, font styles etc. While designing in CSS3, one can also implement drop shadows conveniently and with all these styling from a single file, he can create a more polished website. Such websites are also lighter in terms of storage space, bandwidth consumption and load time.
Some Highlighting features of CSS3 include:
- Specifications are split into different modules
- Modules exist as different stages of development and priority
- Modules include features like font selection, Color Schemes etc.
Advantages of CSS3
- Improved Element and Content Targeting
- Allows new styling options like drop shadows etc.
There are also a bunch of new features being implemented into CSS3 that work in accordance with HTML5 so as to simplify the work of developers. Though it is not yet accomplished, CSS3 has been categorised into different levels of completion. Some of the features are provided completely, but there are other features too that are still in their testing stage. Features like, layout and text formatting are ready for developers to be used, while some other features are yet to be implemented. As it happened in the case of HTML5, there also exists few browser compatibility issues with CSS3 as well. However, such issues continued to reduce over time as a result of continuous work.
